Overview

What Cost of Hope is

Cost of Hope is the first paid story expansion for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl from GSC Game World. The player again controls Skif, and the story unfolds nonlinearly, running parallel to the main campaign: it all starts with a mysterious signal that arrives on the PDA.

According to GSC, this is the middle part of a "second trilogy": the base game is part one, Cost of Hope is part two, and the arc will be closed by a third, not-yet-announced expansion. Completing the story will take dozens of hours, and those who want to see everything will spend even more.

Location / 01

Iron Forest

A maze of previously unseen locations with its own hub and dozens of smaller points of interest. Here you'll find live downed power lines and localized gravitational anomalies that shift the flow of combat right in the middle of an encounter.

Location / 02

Chornobyl NPP

Territory that's been off-limits to stalkers for decades — the series' symbolic endpoint ever since the first game in 2007. Reportedly, players will find an entire explorable underground city inside.

Story

Duty vs. Freedom

At the heart of the expansion is the collapse of the D4 Treaty, an agreement that for years had kept open war between the factions at bay. The fragile peace is falling apart, and Skif ends up at the epicenter. The player's choices will affect how this chapter of the story ends — and what it means for the Zone and its inhabitants.

Personnel

New companions and enemies

  • Zulu — a Duty veteran familiar to fans from Call of Pripyat; he returns disillusioned with his own faction.
  • Mavka — a Freedom operative with hidden motives; in the base game she hosted the Arena at Rostok.
  • The masked enemy with high-tech gear — a new antagonist from the trailer.

Weapon lists (G3, HK433, HK51, Fort-230, Vepr-12, SKS-31) and new mutants come from trailers and press materials — GSC has not yet published an official full list.

Patch 2.0

Free update 2.0

Alongside the DLC, on August 20, the free 2.0 update "Back to the Zone" went live for all owners of the game — you don't need to buy the expansion to get it. GSC calls it the most technical update in the game's history: an engine move from Unreal Engine 5.1 to 5.5.4, new mechanics and a noticeably reworked Zone.

Based on the official "Back to the Zone" announcement on stalker2.com. The Zone Kit modding toolset was also updated — with narrative design, audio and localization tools.

Developer dossier

Made in Ukraine, during the war

GSC Game World brought the expansion to release under conditions of full-scale war: part of the team relocated to Prague while keeping a presence in Kyiv, working through cyberattacks and power outages. STALKER 2 has been nominated for the BAFTA Games Awards 2026 in the "Game Beyond Entertainment" category.
